"Lakes of the Clouds Hut, White Mountains, NH," original watercolor and ink painting on paper
Lakes of the Clouds Hut, highest of the Appalachian Mountain Club's eight backcountry huts, sits on the slope of mighty Mount Washington, New Hampshire's highest peak. Set in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest, this is a truly transcendent place. The alpine zone is strange and wonderful, and by staying at this lofty spot one can experience it in all types of weather, through bright sunrises and dusky, gorgeous sunsets.
Many of us go to the mountains for the challenge, to hike somewhere new, to see a spot we've been told the crowds don't go, and to have an adventure with close friends. The White Mountains of New Hampshire offer all of those things and I've spent many nights in this and other huts, watching the sun go down over endless views. This is a capture of just one of those trips, made to stop time and act as a reminder of every epic backpacking experience.
