"Stream After Rain," 10x10 inch oil painting on panel
Last summer a friend and I tackled the big, hard loop hike of Mounts Whiteface and Passaconaway, starting at the Ferncroft Trailhead. It was a warm day with big clouds passing overhead as we climbed up to the summits. By afternoon it looked like rain was moving in. On our way down we were caught in a spectacular downpour that drowned out all other sounds as it pounded against the hoods of our raincoats. Tired and dripping we plodded on. Just before reaching the road the rain stopped, the sun broke through and the forest sparkled. Crossing Spring Brook we stopped to watch mist rise off the water and into the beams of sun coming down through the leaves. It brought a deep sense of peace and magic to the moment. Walking the dirt road back to the car in full sun we were soon dried out again, tired but happy with a day's adventure.
