"Cairn 6," framed 5.5x5.5 inch oil on paper painting

From a short series of cairns painted around the Northeast's alpine zones. Cairns mark the way along trails where there are no trees on which to paint blazes or hang signs. They guide hikers in foggy conditions and keep you on the right track.
I painted a small series of cairn paintings on paper to change up my technique. By coating watercolor in white gesso (a thick, opaque, water-mixable paint), I get a surface with just a little texture and it seals the paper from the oil paint. It is a joy to work with and it's perfect for these small, gem-like paintings.
