"Ready for Winter," 9x9 inch watercolor and ink painting on paper
This piece encapsulates one of the things I love about living in rural New Hampshire and heating with wood. Every year we have wood delivered. It gets neatly stacked in the woodshed, where it will spend over a year drying out. We often split chunks into smaller piece with an axe, thus warming ourselves multiple times in the work of chopping, stacking and hauling. The first fire of the season is always special and marks a change in the weather. Laying out that first bit of kindling, watching it magically catch and light, then feeding the fire with the wood we've tended all year is one of the best parts of beginning of winter.
