"A Burst of Sunlight" framed 18x24 inch oil painting on panel

The scorching sun illuminates the rocks of the mountainside; a stark contrast to the dark clouds overhead. Alpine sedges whip their ochre heads in the stiff breeze. Can you hear the wind and the crunch of your boots on the rocky trail?

This paintng captures a distinctly White Mountains experience. A narrow footpath threads through granite boulders and alpine grasses, guiding the eye toward the next cairn ahead. It invites you in to a hike above the trees, where only the hardiest plants and creatures can survive. Overhead, a dark bank of clouds sweep across the ridgeline. Will showers crop up or will the clouds part again? As they say, wait five minutes and find out.

I painted this one after a multi-day trek on the Presidential Range where I stopped to sketch and make small watercolor studies. I wanted to catch the drama of sun and cloud, the ever-present wind, and the feeling of being up in a high place, exposed to the elements.
