Every really good, pointy rock on the edge of the sea is likely to have a gull or other shore bird on it, keeping watch. I painted this scene during my Artist Residency at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island, Maine. While seated below this group of rocks, a young gull strolled right up and inspected my painting, making sure I was doing his kin justice.

The slanting light of early morning and late afternoon is always the most dramatic. This little vignette is painted from a scene that I came upon while hiking up Mount Chocorua early one day after staying overnight at Jim Liberty Shelter. After a night of rain and clouds, the sky way perfectly blue, the air still and chilly. Picturesque groups of trees clung to the mountain all the way up the west side of the rocky cone. They were slowly touched by sun as it climbed up from the east.

The Ammonoosuc River passes by down the hill from me, and every section of the river is a delight. Some parts are smooth as the water wends its way around boulders. Other parts are full of cascades. On a chilly day this autumn I stood at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road and painted this slice of mountain slopes. I painted quickly to capture the clouds as they whisked in and out of the ravines, obscured the mountain altogether, then lifted and flew off. Framed 9x12 inch oil on panel. White Mountains, NH.

Just a little slice of a river during peak foliage. I could have painted the whole scene of the river, the woods, and the sky above, but there was so much color and sparkle to be found just in this small passage of water and rocks that I was content to study it alone.
