Even on the hottest day of the year, the Lakes of the Clouds on New Hampshire's Mount Washington will shock you with their frigid water. It's always a chilly day for a swim in an alpine pond. Just dangling your feet in the water will send a shiver up your spine.
I hiked up the Jewell Trail to the summit of Mount Washington and down the Crawford Path on a hot, late summer day and stopped to soak in the view of alpine plants, rocks, and stunted trees lining the far shore. The shockingly cold water of the lake is a reminder of the ruggedness of this mountain environment, but the water's glassy surface lulls you into a sense of peace.
