There's a place on the Mount Willard Trail where it goes around a sharp corner and continues on up a gentle slope to the overlook. Hiking this bit late in the day, the sun rakes through the trees and stretches the shadows of balsam and beech down the slope, creating stripes of blue and white on the snow. It is a quiet, magic time of day, when sunset isn't all that far away, but you can still make it to the top and hike down in the glowing sunset.
