"Simplon Pass after Sargent," framed 8x10 inch oil on panel painting

Every once in a while I try my hand at a copy of a painting by one of the greats. In this case I chose John Singer Sargent's Simplon Pass for the challenge of this rocky landscape. His brushstokes and color are amazing - and incredibly hard to replicate! I had to try to emulate his 'intentional messiness' to get the feeling of the painting just right. His style is much more loose than I am used to, but this painting was a great lesson in letting go, mixing colors minimally and really just painting with my gut.
