Mount Garfield in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was named in honor of President James A. Garfield shortly after his assassination in 1881. Before his death, the 4,500-foot peak was known as Haystack Mountain (or colloquially as "The Haystack") due to its distinct, rounded shape. Following President Garfield’s assassination, a wave of national mourning led to numerous geographical landmarks across the United States being renamed in his memory. In New Hampshire, the name was officially changed to Mount Garfield to pay tribute to the fallen 20th president.
