I love the challenge and intricacy of painting water and rocks. There are so many fragments, flecks of color, and highlights to every pond, stream and river, weather the water is still and glassy or tumbling over rocks. Just painting one little segment of a boulder-filled northern stream can be quite an undertaking. But all the detail and thoughts of the stream itself on a summer's day are well worth the effort. The painting becomes a window on a small swath of moss, rocks and cool mountain water where you can rest your eyes and dream of summer swimming holes and stream wading.
