The alpine zone, with its stunted trees, amazing plant life and unbeatable views, is far and away my favorite part of the White Mountains.

The Ammonoosuc River passes by down the hill from me, and every section of the river is a delight. Some parts are smooth as the water wends its way around boulders. Other parts are full of cascades. Every really good, pointy rock on the edge of the sea is likely to have a gull or other shore bird on it, keeping watch. I painted this scene during my Artist Residency at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island, Maine. While seated below this group of rocks, a young gull strolled right up and inspected my painting, making sure I was doing his kin justice.
