The slanting light of early morning and late afternoon is always the most dramatic. This little vignette is painted from a scene that I came upon while hiking up Mount Chocorua early one day after staying overnight at Jim Liberty Shelter. After a night of rain and clouds, the sky way perfectly blue, the air still and chilly. Picturesque groups of trees clung to the mountain all the way up the west side of the rocky cone. They were slowly touched by sun as it climbed up from the east.

Trails crisscross the slopes of Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. On the east side they skim along the tops of Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine, where you can look back across the rocky plains and down the steep cliffs below.
