I tried to capture the strange, bittersweet beauty of a first snow in this scene of the old Crest Park Inn at Windham, New York, among the Catskill Mountains. There's just something about old, white clapboard houses in a snowy, Northeast landscape. The foreground paint is laid down with a pallet knife to give the effect of damp, new fallen snow on a day not quite cold enough to make it stick. But you definitely know winter is on its way. The bare trees stand out against soft gray skies and the house stands quiet; all buttoned up for winter.
