The White Mountains come out of winter in tones of gray and brown before the greens of early spring begin to emerge. By June the leaves are out, and then, for a brief and glorious couple of weeks, the fields and meadows erupt with the bright purples and pinks of the most extraordinary flowers: lupines. They are a sight of wonder and beauty. It is like magic to see them reappear every year. I could not let the season pass by without capturing them in paint as part of the scene at the top of Crawford Notch, looking out at Mount Webster.
