I wouldn't normally venture up Mount Washington on a Saturday, but one rare weekend I did just that. The trails and summits above 5,000 feet were all socked in by clouds that day, making it an ideal way to avoid the crowds. The Ammonoosuc Ravine trail was its usual, busy self, but once up at the Lakes of the Clouds I shifted off the popular Crawford Path onto the untrammeled trails east of the summit. Fifty yards off the beaten path and into the mist not another soul could be seen or heard. The silent, gray beauty of it all was transcendent. This painting, derived from images recorded that day, pays homage to the quiet, the fog, and the peace of a misty day above treeline.
