When the sun starts setting early in winter it becomes harder to avoid hiking in the dark if you want to get too far out in the mountains. I took a late day hike as far as the Ranger Station at Tuckerman Ravine last winter and the ravine was already well into shadow when I arrived. I hopped and slid my way back down the trail watching the blues of evening creep up the Wildcat Ridge across the notch as I descended, feeling alive in the snappy cold air of the snow-covered world around me.
