Every really good, pointy rock on the edge of the sea is likely to have a gull or other shore bird on it, keeping watch. I painted this scene during my Artist Residency at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island, Maine. While seated below this group of rocks, a young gull strolled right up and inspected my painting, making sure I was doing his kin justice.

Seeing clouds settle like pools in the valley below a mountain range is one of my favorite phenomenon. This is a view down along the Crawford Path looking south into the Pemigewasset Wilderness where, in the early evening clouds rolled like ocean waves between the peaks.

The slanting light of early morning and late afternoon is always the most dramatic. This little vignette is painted from a scene that I came upon while hiking up Mount Chocorua early one day after staying overnight at Jim Liberty Shelter. After a night of rain and clouds, the sky way perfectly blue, the air still and chilly. Picturesque groups of trees clung to the mountain all the way up the west side of the rocky cone. They were slowly touched by sun as it climbed up from the east.

Mount Moosilauke is an alluring place. Set apart from the rest of the White Mountains, its wide, open meadow top is so enchanting. Though it may not be much fun to slog through a long hike on a hot, humid summer day, there is a lovely quality to the air. The greens of blues of water and woods soften. The Ammonoosuc River passes by down the hill from me, and every section of the river is a delight. Some parts are smooth as the water wends its way around boulders. Other parts are full of cascades. On a chilly day this autumn I stood at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road and painted this slice of mountain slopes. I painted quickly to capture the clouds as they whisked in and out of the ravines, obscured the mountain altogether, then lifted and flew off. Framed 9x12 inch oil on panel. White Mountains, NH.

Just a little slice of a river during peak foliage. I could have painted the whole scene of the river, the woods, and the sky above, but there was so much color and sparkle to be found just in this small passage of water and rocks that I was content to study it alone.

I painted this diminutive waterfall after seeing ever so many of them along the White Mountain trails that I often wander. Tiny streams and freshets spring out of the woods all around and tumble sparkling down the mountains here.
