"Spring Brook After Rain," is a 20 by 30 inch oil on canvas painting by Rebecca M. Fullerton, depicting a sparkling brook running through the woods, showered with sunbeams. The slanting light of early morning and late afternoon is always the most dramatic. This little vignette is painted from a scene that I came upon while hiking up Mount Chocorua early one day after staying overnight at Jim Liberty Shelter. After a night of rain and clouds, the sky way perfectly blue, the air still and chilly. Picturesque groups of trees clung to the mountain all the way up the west side of the rocky cone. They were slowly touched by sun as it climbed up from the east.

Seeing clouds settle like pools in the valley below a mountain range is one of my favorite phenomenon. This is a view down along the Crawford Path looking south into the Pemigewasset Wilderness where, in the early evening clouds rolled like ocean waves between the peaks.

Trails crisscross the slopes of Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. On the east side they skim along the tops of Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine, where you can look back across the rocky plains and down the steep cliffs below. There are many 'notches' in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Pinkham Notch is a gorgeous spot surrounded by tall peaks and full of trails. There's a place on the Mount Willard Trail where it goes around a sharp corner and continues on up a gentle slope to the overlook.
