The slanting light of early morning and late afternoon is always the most dramatic. This little vignette is painted from a scene that I came upon while hiking up Mount Chocorua early one day after staying overnight at Jim Liberty Shelter. After a night of rain and clouds, the sky way perfectly blue, the air still and chilly. Picturesque groups of trees clung to the mountain all the way up the west side of the rocky cone. They were slowly touched by sun as it climbed up from the east.

I painted this diminutive waterfall after seeing ever so many of them along the White Mountain trails that I often wander. Tiny streams and freshets spring out of the woods all around and tumble sparkling down the mountains here. Tuckerman Ravine holds a special draw for winter hikers and skiers. I've hiked up many times just to see the staggering cliffs.
